Since my father’s passing, there have been many suggestions on how to remember and honour him. I spoke in Parliament about these today. (http://bit.ly/1GD65JO)
Some MPs shared their views too. Ms Chia Yong Yong felt that rather than spending time debating memorials, we should think about how we can ensure that his ideals and values carry on through the generations.
I agree with Yong Yong. The ideals and the way we live our lives are more important than any physical thing we build. Yet a physical symbol is also helpful to focus our minds, if we can build something filled with meaning.
The memorial we decide upon should reflect and strengthen our sense of what it means to be a Singaporean, why Singapore is worth striving and fighting for, and how we can continue to build a harmonious and successful Singapore for future generations.
